Anonymous Sudan, not so anonymous

As its name does not indicate, Anonymous Sudan has nothing to do with either Anonymous or Sudan. Despite the use of Arabic and religious references for political purposes, this is all part of a Russian disinformation strategy.

On February, the group claimed to have launched a distributed denial of service (DdoS) attack on multiple US companies, like PayPal, Microsoft or American Express. The same that attacked smilingly Swedish organizations last January, and a Danish Hospital in February.

Most recently, Anonymous Sudan attacked France the same way. Several French airports , healthcare and Universities were targeted. All those attacks lead to the same target’s profile, all NATO members, and supporters of Ukraine. But what distinguishes France is that Russia is engaged in a campaign of disinformation to make it leave the countries of West Africa where Russia is trying to anchor, with the nefarious private company Wagner.

Anonymous Sudan is said to be affiliated to Killnet; a pro-Russian hacktivist group backed by the Kremlin. Swedish cybersecurity company Truesec found evidence that the group’s Telegram account is located in Russia. Truesec shows how the TTP adopted isn’t like the hacktivists modus operandi, that are acting more spontaneously and shows the more complex and timely setups organized to carry out the attacks.
